Bahrain became a constitutional monarchy
in 2001, and in 2002 the nation held
its first democratic elections in over a
quarter of a century—also the first time
Bahraini women were allowed to vote
and run for office. Amidst this and other
progressive political reforms, women’s
groups such as the Bahrain Women Society
began implementing programs to
expand women’s active participation and
leadership in politics and civil society.
In fall 2007, WIT expanded its activities
to Bahrain, working with the Bahrain
Women Society and other organizations
to support their women’s empowerment
initiatives with WIT’s unique IT and Professional
Development training. With
these partners, WIT aimed to promote
more women to positions of leadership
throughout the country.
