With Iraq emerging as a leader in the Arab
IT sector, WIT had tremendous success
in the expansion of its programs
since its initiation in 2006. WIT grew
from three to eight Partner Organizations
in its first year, by working with
local organizations dedicated to
women’s education and empowerment.
This growth also served women
from internally displaced populations
(IDPs) in need of professional skills
training and employment. Since WIT’s
launch, several women graduates have
secured employment with IT and media
companies, universities, and NGOs.
For women isolated from social and
work environments, WIT served as
an important forum in which to reconnect,
build social and professional relationships,
and participate in goal-oriented
group activities. Restricted mobility
within Iraq continues to spur a demand
for mobile technologies, and WIT
participants—through their IT and professional
leadership skills—emerged
as key players in civil society and community-building activities. Using their
training skills, several WIT participants
have chosen to volunteer their time facilitating
youth workshops focused on civil dialogue and
conflict resolution.
