Like several countries in the region, Morocco’s
government has recently taken
bold steps to support women’s participation
in the public sphere and to encourage
women’s leadership in government and
business. Among other reforms, King Muhammad
instituted a quota system in
2003 to increase women’s representation
in public offices.
To support such efforts with a multipronged
approach, WIT expanded to work
in Morocco in fall 2007, partnering with
local organizations that use technology,
web networks, and educational programs
to connect women with each other and
with professional opportunities. WIT worked with organizations such as the Moroccan
Association of Women Entrepreneurs
(AFEM), which empowers women
to become successful entrepreneurs and
managers, and with Tanmia, an umbrella
organization connecting citizens and
NGOS to exchange information and ideas
in support of development.
